UN Chief Urges Permanent Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Anniversary of Hamas Attack

by admin477351

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the need for a sustainable political solution and increased humanitarian aid. This appeal comes as the region approaches the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which claimed the lives of more than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and saw 251 people taken hostage. Guterres condemned the attack while also acknowledging the severe repercussions faced by Palestinians in Gaza, where ongoing conflict has resulted in more than 74,200 Palestinian deaths according to Gaza health authorities.

Guterres pointed out that a ceasefire announced in October 2025 offered some respite but failed to ensure lasting security or adequate recovery efforts. He underscored the urgency of ending the suffering for both Israelis and Palestinians by establishing conditions where both communities can coexist with security and dignity, their rights upheld.

The UN chief’s plea highlights the broader humanitarian crisis and the need for international law to be respected. He stressed the importance of continuous efforts to create a viable path towards peace, calling on all parties involved to contribute to a resolution that prioritizes human rights and safety.
