New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung are exploring the possibility of Mamdani visiting the Indonesian capital. This potential visit follows a meeting between the two leaders in New York during the U20 Mayors Summit 2026, where they discussed shared urban challenges.
Governor Pramono indicated that discussions regarding Mamdani’s visit are still in preliminary stages, with no official confirmation yet. The visit is tentatively proposed for late October, coinciding with a conference in Jakarta, although details remain to be finalized.
During their meeting, Mamdani and Pramono exchanged insights on managing urban issues such as public transportation, traffic congestion, flooding, and air pollution. Mamdani showed particular interest in Jakarta’s initiatives to alleviate traffic congestion and bolster its public transportation system, while Pramono highlighted the development of Transjabodetabek, a comprehensive transportation network linking Jakarta with nearby cities and regions.
The leaders also discussed strategies for urban development financing. Pramono shared Jakarta’s plans to issue municipal bonds, referred to as Jakarta Bonds, to fund infrastructure projects. In response, Mamdani offered to facilitate collaboration between New York and Jakarta’s finance teams to share expertise on municipal bond issuance.
These discussions underscore a commitment to international cooperation between the two cities, as they seek to address common urban challenges and explore opportunities for economic and infrastructural growth.
