In the wake of devastating floods and landslides in Nepal, Malaysia is poised to deploy a team of DNA experts, pending approval from Nepalese authorities. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced that the country is seeking permission to send these specialists to assist in identifying victims. The DNA identification process is set to commence once search and rescue operations are concluded. This crucial effort involves comparing DNA samples from recovered bodies with those provided by families of missing Malaysians.
Currently, Malaysia has collected DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysian citizens who remain missing following the natural disasters. Given the limited facilities in the affected areas, some recovered bodies were buried swiftly, underscoring the importance of DNA testing for accurate identification. The deployment of the DNA experts aims to provide clarity and closure to the families waiting for news about their loved ones.
The Malaysian team, comprising 11 personnel, is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue gear. This includes detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescues. Additionally, they are equipped with a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck, enhancing their capacity to navigate and operate in challenging terrains.
Malaysia’s comprehensive approach combines search, rescue, and DNA identification efforts to locate the missing and confirm the identities of victims. This initiative reflects a commitment to providing support and relief to those affected by the disasters, while also ensuring that families receive the information they desperately need about their relatives.
