United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commended Indonesia for its significant contributions to global cooperation and peacekeeping efforts. Speaking at the Foreign Policy Circle Talks in Jakarta, Guterres emphasized Indonesia’s pivotal role in promoting multilateralism and fostering diplomatic relations across the Asia-Pacific region and the Global South.

Guterres highlighted Indonesia’s active participation in international organizations, including the United Nations, ASEAN, the G20, and BRICS. He recalled the historic 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, hosted by Indonesia, which championed non-alignment and national self-determination principles.

Indonesia’s commitment to UN peacekeeping was a key focus during Guterres’ visit. With nearly 2,000 Indonesian military and police personnel deployed in seven UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, Guterres praised their efforts in maintaining global peace. He visited a peacekeeping training center in Sentul, West Java, where he met personnel preparing for deployment to the UN mission in the Central African Republic, commending their training and dedication.

The Secretary-General also underscored the collaboration between ASEAN and the UN in areas such as conflict prevention, sustainable development, and human rights. He noted that Indonesia’s diplomatic engagement and peacekeeping contributions have bolstered its role in facilitating dialogue and cooperation between nations.

Guterres’ visit and remarks underscore Indonesia’s growing influence on the international stage, as it continues to play a crucial role in promoting peace and multilateral cooperation across various global platforms.
