Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming that it is hindering investigations into the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots who have reportedly gone missing amid recent hostilities. Despite these allegations, Qatar has firmly denied any involvement or detention of the pilots. The situation has led to heightened tensions between the two nations.
Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official with Iran’s armed forces, stated that a team of Iranian Air Force experts has been awaiting clearance for several months to travel to Qatar and conduct an investigation into the pilots’ disappearance. He called on Doha to grant the necessary permissions and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to take an active role in addressing the issue. Iran had previously managed to recover the body of Majid Kazemi, a pilot who died during an attack linked to the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
In response, Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, categorically rejected the claim that the pilots were held in Qatar. According to al-Ansari, Qatar took defensive measures after the Iranian pilots allegedly violated Qatari airspace and failed to respond to communication attempts. He emphasized that Qatar’s search and rescue teams had been actively engaged in efforts to locate the pilots and any remains, coordinating with Iran to ensure the transfer of the recovered body of one pilot.
Qatar insists that it extended an invitation in April for Iranian authorities to send a team to receive information on the search and rescue operations conducted. However, the invitation reportedly went unanswered by Tehran. This ongoing dispute surfaces amid broader regional tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other countries following the recent conflict’s onset. Qatar has been playing a significant diplomatic role, striving to ease tensions and enhance communication among the involved parties.
