Indonesia has taken a significant step in advancing its role in the realm of artificial intelligence by becoming a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). The country’s commitment to global AI collaboration was underscored during discussions between Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. In these talks, Hartarto emphasized Indonesia’s support for the establishment of an AI governance framework that prioritizes equitable development, innovation centered around human needs, respect for national sovereignty, inclusive multilateralism, and adherence to United Nations principles.

Additionally, Indonesia has expressed its interest in securing a senior role within the secretariat of WAICO. This move is part of a broader push to foster stronger ties with China in areas such as artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. Hartarto highlighted the need for expedited market access for Indonesian exports and extended an invitation for Chinese companies to increase their investments in sectors like advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks, signaling significant opportunities for economic collaboration.

The discussions also touched upon Indonesia’s support for China’s upcoming chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2026. This endorsement is part of a strategic effort to enhance bilateral relations, with Airlangga proposing the organization of a bilateral business summit. This summit would coincide with an anticipated meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping, aimed at further deepening economic cooperation between the two nations.

Through these diplomatic engagements, Indonesia is demonstrating a clear commitment to expanding its influence and partnerships in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. By aligning with international initiatives and fostering stronger economic ties with major global players like China, Indonesia is positioning itself as a proactive participant in shaping the future of AI governance and innovation.
