Thailand has conveyed concerns to China regarding its recent shipment of tanks to Cambodia, cautioning that this action might destabilize the delicate ceasefire established between Thailand and Cambodia after last year’s violent border clashes. During a meeting held last week, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed these concerns with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as stated by Thailand’s foreign ministry. Officials have highlighted that the timing and manner of this military delivery could further strain the already tense relations between Thailand and Cambodia, despite several ceasefire agreements in place.
According to Thai authorities, Cambodia received 39 Chinese-manufactured T-59D battle tanks as part of an existing military cooperation agreement. They noted that there is no evidence suggesting these tanks have been stationed near the border. Tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbors have persisted since the violent confrontations along their shared border last year. Ongoing disputes over land and maritime boundaries, which trace back to colonial-era treaties and maps, continue to impede diplomatic negotiations.
China has reiterated that its defense collaboration with both Thailand and Cambodia is routine and not directed against any third party. Earlier this year, China also supplied Cambodia with a Type 056 guided-missile corvette, reinforcing its defense ties with the nation. While acknowledging China’s neutral stance, Thai officials have expressed appreciation for China’s efforts to de-escalate tensions, emphasizing that the resolution of the dispute ultimately requires direct dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia.
During their discussions, Thailand and China also agreed to launch a new dialogue mechanism involving their foreign and defense ministers. The first round of talks under this new framework is anticipated to concentrate on addressing cross-border scam operations, reflecting a broader effort to enhance regional cooperation on security issues.
