Thailand Uses Tech to Prevent Cambodia from Globalizing Border Conflict

by admin477351

Efforts to mend ties between Thailand and Cambodia could face setbacks if ongoing border disputes continue to surface on international stages, Thailand has cautioned. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow expressed concern that accusations presented against Thailand at global forums might jeopardize the trust-building measures both nations are working towards.

This warning from Thailand came after comments by Cambodia’s UN ambassador, Keo Chhea, at a UN Security Council gathering, where he highlighted the humanitarian impact of past border skirmishes between the two countries. Cambodia has pointed out that previous conflicts led to significant civilian displacement, the destruction of homes and infrastructure, and inflicted damage on the Preah Vihear Temple, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In response, Thailand criticized Cambodia’s remarks as being one-sided and claimed they contradicted the spirit of an agreement finalized in late 2025. This accord was designed to foster reconciliation and rebuild mutual confidence between the neighboring nations. Meanwhile, Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border issues through peaceful dialogue, adherence to international law, and the observance of current ceasefire agreements.

The enduring border tensions, particularly around the contested areas near the Preah Vihear Temple, have been a persistent source of strain in Thailand-Cambodia relations. Despite these challenges, both countries have expressed intentions to work towards peaceful solutions and maintain diplomatic communication to address these disputes.
