Thailand has successfully completed the initial 1.3-kilometre stretch of a permanent border fence with Cambodia, marking a significant step in enhancing border security. This development comes in the wake of last year’s confrontations between the two countries, which underscored the need for reinforced boundaries.
The newly constructed section in Chanthaburi province features reinforced concrete panels topped with steel mesh and concertina wire, a design intended for long-lasting protection. According to Thai military officials, the fence has been rigorously tested to endure small-arms fire, ensuring its effectiveness in safeguarding the region.
Plans are underway to extend this fencing by an additional seven kilometres, integrating it with the current structure. Authorities are also evaluating other strategic locations along the 817-kilometre Thailand–Cambodia border for further construction. The future expansion of the fence will be guided by considerations of terrain and environmental conditions, ensuring the project remains practical and sustainable over time.
The border’s security remains a priority following previous territorial disputes, which escalated into two bouts of armed conflict last year. These clashes involved artillery and air strikes, leading to significant casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of individuals. Ceasefire agreements have since been established to halt the hostilities, but the area continues to be heavily guarded to prevent future conflicts.
