Vietnam, Malaysia Enhance Defence Ties with Focus on Technological Innovation

Vietnam and Malaysia are taking significant steps to enhance their defence collaboration as part of broader efforts to bolster bilateral relations and ensure regional stability. This was underscored during discussions in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, General Phan Văn Giang, and Malaysia’s outgoing Ambassador, Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. The meeting highlighted the ambassador’s contributions to elevating the cooperative dynamics between the two Southeast Asian nations.

General Giang emphasized the advancements made in defence cooperation, noting the regular military exchanges and policy discussions that have taken place. These developments also include joint training initiatives and coordinated efforts at international and multilateral forums, reflecting a robust partnership. He urged for the continuation of existing agreements and advocated for enhanced dialogue through high-level meetings and established defence cooperation frameworks.

In a forward-looking gesture, Giang extended an invitation to Malaysia’s defence leaders and industry representatives to participate in the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026, scheduled to be held in Hanoi. This invitation underscores Vietnam’s commitment to deepening military ties with Malaysia and engaging in collaborative defence initiatives.

Expressing gratitude, Ambassador Tan Yang Thai thanked Vietnam’s defence ministry and military for their support throughout his tenure. He expressed optimism about the future growth of defence relations between the two countries, emphasizing their role in promoting peace and prosperity within the region.
