Malaysia has set a determined goal for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, aiming to secure a total of 33 medals, comprising six gold, seven silver, and 20 bronze. The event, scheduled to take place from September 19 to October 4, will see the nation’s athletes competing vigorously across various sports. According to Malaysia’s Chef de Mission, Mohd Sumali Reduan, the target is deemed realistic when considering the athletes’ current form, past performances, and the competitive landscape throughout Asia.
The Malaysian team has pinpointed 13 sports with significant medal prospects. These include track cycling, badminton, archery, diving, and squash, alongside sepak takraw, hockey, athletics, sailing, karate, wushu, esports, and shooting. As Malaysia prepares for this continental competition, a contingent of 352 athletes supported by 185 officials will represent the country. They are set to participate in 30 out of the 43 sports featured at the Games, competing in 156 of the 469 scheduled events.
Among the athletes, wushu competitor Tan Cheong Min will have the honor of being Malaysia’s flag-bearer for the Games. The team also pins high hopes on track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang, who is anticipated to significantly contribute to Malaysia’s medal tally. The dedication and preparation of the athletes underscore the nation’s pursuit of excellence on this prestigious stage.
In addition to the Asian Games, Malaysia’s contingent is also preparing for the Asian Para Games, set to take place from October 18 to 24. The team aims to achieve six gold, 10 silver, and 18 bronze medals in this event, reflecting a concerted effort to excel across both platforms. This dual focus highlights Malaysia’s commitment to showcasing its athletic prowess through both able-bodied and para-athlete performances.
