Indonesia is poised to enhance its position in the global artificial intelligence (AI) sector by leveraging its abundant critical mineral resources, particularly nickel and copper, to bolster digital infrastructure. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria stated that the country’s mineral processing efforts aim to support resilient, efficient, and sustainable digital infrastructure while maximizing domestic value.
Nickel and copper are essential components for AI infrastructure, playing a crucial role in the production of batteries, electrical equipment, and the systems that underpin data centers and transmission networks. Indonesia’s dominance in nickel production, accounting for approximately 62% of the global mined supply, positions it as a key player in the mineral supply chain. Patria emphasized that this advantage must be complemented by responsible processing practices, environmental safeguards, traceability, and sustainable labor practices.
However, Patria noted that the development of AI infrastructure extends beyond mineral resources. It also requires reliable electricity supplies, robust fiber-optic networks, efficient data centers and cooling systems, a skilled workforce, and effective governance to fully realize its potential.
Indonesia’s strategy involves utilizing its mineral wealth, rapidly growing digital economy, and expanding technology workforce to establish itself as a regional AI hub. This approach aims not only to strengthen the country’s technological capabilities but also to create higher-value jobs within the domestic market.
As Indonesia continues to integrate its mineral resources with digital advancements, the country aspires to lay the groundwork for sustainable growth in the AI industry, ensuring that it remains competitive in the evolving global tech landscape.
