Tech Surge in Malaysia: Data Centres Boost Jobs Amid Resource Concerns

Malaysia is witnessing a significant surge in data-centre and cloud-computing investments, driven by the growing demand for artificial intelligence, cloud services, and digital applications. This growth is opening up new avenues for employment and local businesses but also increasing the strain on the nation’s electricity, water, and other infrastructure resources. In the first half of 2026 alone, Malaysia approved RM95.8 billion in such investments, which represents nearly 44% of the total approved investments during this period. Johor and the Klang Valley have emerged as key locations for these new data facilities.

The expansion of the data-centre sector is fueling a demand for professionals in fields such as data science, engineering, cybersecurity, telecommunications, construction, electrical work, and facility management. Additionally, these projects are creating opportunities for Malaysian companies to provide construction, engineering, electrical, and other related services. However, the continuous operation of data centres requires significant electricity, especially for servers and cooling systems. By December 2025, electricity demand from data centres in Peninsular Malaysia reached 849 megawatts, with projections indicating a rise to 4,811 megawatts by 2030.

In response to the growing electricity needs, the Malaysian government plans to add up to 9,600 megawatts of power-generation capacity between 2028 and 2031, which will also help replace ageing power plants. Authorities are currently reviewing electricity-use projections submitted by proposed data centres to avoid unnecessary infrastructure investments and ensure proper management of additional costs. Besides electricity, cooling systems make data centres substantial water consumers, prompting authorities to advocate for the use of reclaimed and alternative water sources over treated drinking water.

Johor has introduced plans to supply up to 12 million litres of reclaimed water daily for data-centre cooling. Similar initiatives are underway in the Klang Valley, aiming to promote sustainability within the industry. Furthermore, the Malaysian government has set requirements for new data-centre projects, ensuring they demonstrate adequate power and water supplies and adhere to energy-efficiency standards. Data centres must achieve specified Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) targets, with a limit of 1.6 for colocation facilities and 1.4 for hyperscale operators.

While Malaysia’s data-centre expansion promises substantial economic and employment benefits, the authorities are increasingly focused on ensuring the industry’s growth does not excessively burden the country’s electricity and water resources. Through strategic planning and sustainability initiatives, the nation aims to balance development with resource conservation, ensuring a sustainable future for its burgeoning digital infrastructure.
