During a meeting in Hà Nội on September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing committed to deepening their countries’ bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors. This marked Min Aung Hlaing’s inaugural visit to Vietnam in his current role, where Hưng expressed support for Myanmar’s ongoing efforts in achieving stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic progress. Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam’s socio-economic advancements and its increasing influence on both regional and international stages, showing interest in understanding Vietnam’s development strategies. He reiterated Myanmar’s dedication to nurturing its longstanding friendship and broad collaboration with Vietnam.
The leaders recognized recent advancements in bilateral relations and agreed to enhance high-level exchanges and political trust. They emphasized the importance of resuming key cooperation mechanisms encompassing trade, security, and defense. Strengthening defense and security cooperation is anticipated to become a cornerstone of their partnership, with plans to intensify efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Additionally, they aim to expand military training, young officer exchanges, and collaborate on non-traditional security challenges.
Economic collaboration stood out as a significant focus, with both leaders exploring opportunities to boost trade and update existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar expressed interest in attracting Vietnamese investments in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. They also discussed enhancing infrastructure and air connectivity, considering the restoration of direct flights and the development of joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism.
On the regional front, Vietnam committed to working alongside ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders supported the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law. Additionally, Hưng extended an invitation to Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and preside over the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In return, Min Aung Hlaing invited Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time.
