He died of natural causes in a retirement community for entertainment professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. Rydell’s directorial success was most prominently highlighted by “On Golden Pond,” released in 1981. The film was a significant achievement, uniting stars Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda in a poignant family drama. Garnering 10 Oscar nominations, the film saw both Henry Fonda and Hepburn win Oscars for their performances. Although Rydell himself was nominated for Best Director, the award went to Warren Beatty for “Reds.” “On Golden Pond” was not only successful critically but also commercially, grossing over $119 million worldwide. For Henry Fonda, this role was particularly significant as it was his last and earned him his only Oscar.
