Indonesia has emphasized the need for a credible and impartial process in selecting the next United Nations Secretary-General, citing the importance of strong leadership amid escalating global tensions. The call comes in the wake of the seventh round of informal voting by the UN Security Council on October 30, as the selection process remains inconclusive.

Jakarta has highlighted the necessity for the selection process to adhere to the UN Charter and uphold the principles of international cooperation. Indonesia underlined the significance of ensuring that developing countries have a stronger voice in global decision-making and that the UN delivers meaningful outcomes for its member states.

Among the candidates vying for the position, Lana Nusseibeh, nominated by the United Arab Emirates, has entered the race. Other notable contenders include Rebeca Grynspan, former vice president of Costa Rica and head of the UN Conference on Trade and Development, and Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Turkey has also put forward Feridun Sinirlioglu, Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

The current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, is set to complete his term at the end of 2026, with his successor expected to assume office on January 1, 2027. Indonesia has stressed that the next Secretary-General must have the capability to unite nations, promote respect for international law, and advance necessary reforms within the UN framework.
