Peter Cullen, the distinguished Canadian voice actor renowned for bringing life to Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, has passed away at 85. His family confirmed that Cullen died on Wednesday at his Los Angeles residence, surrounded by loved ones.
Hailing from Montreal, Cullen’s illustrious career began in Canadian television and radio before he became a seminal figure in voice acting. His iconic portrayal of Optimus Prime commenced in the 1984 Transformers animated series, a role he would reprise in seven major films from 2007 to 2023, alongside numerous spin-offs. Cullen’s association with the character of Eeyore also spanned multiple decades, as he lent his voice to the beloved donkey in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and several other television shows, films, and video games.
Cullen’s vocal talents extended beyond these characters, with notable performances including the voice of KARR, the antagonist to KITT, in the series Knight Rider. He also contributed the menacing clicking sounds of the alien in the 1987 film Predator and voiced King Kong in the 1976 remake.
A significant influence in Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime was his older brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain. Larry’s guidance helped Cullen shape the character as a heroic figure who embodied strength without aggression. This distinctive approach earned Cullen a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 and, in 2023, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards.
Spanning several decades, Cullen’s career left an indelible mark on popular culture, with his voice becoming synonymous with some of the most iconic animated and science-fiction characters. His legacy endures as a testament to his remarkable contributions to the entertainment industry.
